Sectoral benchmarking for industry associations

Industry associations want to consume data for creation of industry insights and benchmarks. However, in many sectors data is not yet shared or data is shared manually which requires a lot of effort and can include human error or other data inaccuracies. A generic design on how members can share data with industry association for creation of industry insights and benchmarks provides an opportunity to create new value

Industry insights and benchmarks for members of industry associations

In cooperation with the Data Sharing Coalition, SBR Nexus is developing a use case in cooperation with multiple industry associations where data of industry association members is shared with industry associations to create valuable insights about the whole sector. This concerns different types of data, stored at different cross-domain sources (e.g. financial data stored at an accountant, production efficiency data stored in machines, and/or CO2 footprint data stored at energy providers). Extracting, analysing and reporting this data allows an industry association to provide its members and the larger public (e.g. government agencies) with aggregated insights and trends in industry performance in different relevant (policy) areas. Also, these insights can be used to benchmark an organisation’s individual performance relative to its peers.

A generic design to accelerate implementation

Together with the Data Sharing Coalition, SBR Nexus will create a generic use case design that is scalable to different industry associations and multiple data types, by aligning design choices with best practices and different data sharing contexts. For example, open or closed data sources, yearly or daily data streams and sensitive or non-sensitive data. This means that an industry association can consume multiple data types based on the same generic design.

To achieve this, it is mapped what is required (e.g. standards, rules and agreements) in different contexts of the use case, whether these requirements can be fulfilled generically (across industries) and how these are fulfilled. This use case enables industry associations in all domains to accelerate data sharing activities and facilitates scalability of data sharing activities to different industry associations and multiple data types.

During the development of a generic design insights will be gained on requirements and fulfilment of requirements within multiple sectors and multiple data sharing contexts. These insights will be documented and incorporated in the Harmonisation Canvas, a document that serves to build a foundation for generic, cross-domain agreements for data sharing.

Collaboration within the use case

Through frequent workshops and interviews, SBR Nexus, several industry associations and the Data Sharing Coalition work towards a generic design of this use case. The objective is to have this design ready for implementation in Q1 2021.
